The Huskies men’s volleyball team made light work of the Regina Cougars in a home-and-home series this past week. Meanwhile, the Cougars who edged out the women’s squad in back-to-back matches.

After dismal seasons last year, both the Huskies men’s and women’s volleyball teams started the 2012-13 season expecting to improve their record. Now halfway through the season, the men have proven themselves to be a stronger team than last year while the women still struggle to find the win column.

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies men’s volleyball squad recorded its first sweep of the season Jan. 27 and 28 in Kamloops, B.C.
Led by middle blocker Geoff Zerr, the Huskies were able to come back from a two-sets-to-one deficit in the weekend’s first match and win it 15-8 in the fifth and final set.

The University of Alberta Golden Bears snagged two wins from the Huskies men’s volleyball team this past weekend at the Physical Activity Complex. Meanwhile, a strong first set was the only positive to come out of the Huskies women’s volleyball team’s third straight losing weekend Nov. 11 and 12 at the PAC.
“We just didn’t execute,” said Huskie Matt Busse. “At the end of sets and all the way through, that’s what we need to work on.”

Jason Grieve knows how to rebuild a struggling athletic program. The 38-year-old was recently appointed interim head coach of the Huskies women’s volleyball team ”” a team that has finished the last four seasons with an average .153 win percentage.
