Place Riel businesses are starting to pay off for the University of Saskatchewan Students’ Union, but many of the organization’s own services keep losing money, according to the recently proposed 2012-13 budget.
Overall, the union is projected to lose more than $200,000 in the upcoming academic year. That compares to a loss of $442,845 in 2011-12 and a loss of $278,736 in 2010-11. The last time the USSU did not fall short of breaking even was in 2009-10.

With the $29-million dollar renovation of Place Riel wrapped up this fall, the next major infrastructure project on the University of Saskatchewan Students’ Union’s radar is the Memorial Union Building. During the summer, the USSU attempted to give Browsers a new look, as finances for the cafe and bookstore have dipped in the red in recent years from a decline in used book sales.
With Browsers floundering under a lack of sales, and nine years since a major renovation to Louis, the question is: should Louis’ relocate?

After a lengthy struggle to secure funding for more than a decade, the University of Saskatchewan officially announced it will be moving forward on the $15 million Gordon Oakes-Red Bear Student Centre.
“We expect construction to begin as early as 2012,” said U of S president Peter MacKinnon to a cheering crowd of more than 100 gathered in upper Place Riel Oct. 4.

Progress on Place Riel renovations look promising. Hoarding in Lower Place Riel is down, the Mac’s convenience store is now open and a final agreement with Harvey’s to fill the final open tenancy is pending.
