Place Riel construction is on budget and on schedule, despite flooding over the summer.
Construction continued through the flooding and work on Place Riel was prioritized over other flooded areas on campus.
September will see new offices for the International Students group and Study Abroad, along with food outlets new and familiar, from baked goods at Treats to a new sushi outlet.
Food options will continue to expand in Place Riel throughout the semester and a convenience store is scheduled to open in October.
Upper floors will open later, with a new Student Health Centre and Student Counselling Centre.
“It’s LEED [Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design] certified, which most student buildings on campus are not,” said USSU president Chris Stoicheff. The aim is for Place Riel to have silver LEED certification, a step above basic certification.
“I’m excited about it. It’s a new front door for our campus.”
Grand opening for Place Riel should be February 2011, about a month after construction is complete.
