Since I was a wee lad, being off the ground has profoundly terrified me.
Maybe it’s because I’m from the barren flatlands of Saskatchewan where the nearest thing resembling a skyscraper in most places is an orange Pioneer elevator. It is this exact phobia of heights that has allowed me to appreciate mountain and glacial climbing as the truly perplexing sports they are.

When NBA players started flocking to Twitter, there was no need to abate my excitement. Giving pro athletes a global megaphone was somewhere between sleeping with spiders and peeing into the wind on my to-do list. I was not surprised by how banal most of the players were: Miami’s Dwyane Wade never seems to stop playing with his kids and those who attended college make note of the happenings of their Alma Maters’ sports teams. Yet whenever any of them writes that “life is good” I can’t help but feel like they are ignorant. Of course life is good, you make millions!

Sports come in all shapes and sizes. Cheese wheel rolling is definitely one of the sports that has strayed away from cool-kid sports like football or hockey and has remained a nonsensical outcast on the fringes of athleticism’s social circle.
Experiencing the nomadic lifestyle of a mouse in search of a dairy dinner has never been easier.

Nearly four years had elapsed since I have competitively played baseball, which has been my favourite sport since childhood.
Each summer since, likely due to my mobile lifestyle, I have been prevented from doing so. After departing Saskatoon for yet another summer and moving to B.C.’s west coast, I was asked by a friend’s older brother to come to a slo-pitch practice of a team he was playing on ”” not technically baseball but close enough.
I jumped at the invitation and anxiously unearthed my glove I had handily packed in my trunk. Little did I know I was in for a sobering experience…

Back in elementary school, the dismissal bell was music to many kids’ ears. Everyone rushed home to get in a few hours of fun before dinner. Street hockey was often the sport of choice. Easy to set up and take down, kids would play for hours in the heat, rain or snow, long after dark, and usually under the glow of the streetlights. Do you miss those days, where your troubles slipped away and all that mattered in life was finding a way to put a ball into the back of the net? Now there is the opportunity to relive your youth again
