The city skies were alight with explosions on Labour Day weekend as the Saskatoon Fireworks Festival marked the end of summer.
According to festival producer Kim Ali attendance was around 38,000 for Friday and 40,000 on Saturday night.

To ease the transition and help welcome new and returning First Nations students to the U of S, the Aboriginal Students’ Centre held a banquet on Sept. 4 featuring the comedy of Cree comedian Don Burnstick.

Students’ apathy toward Canadian politics was not mollified by the announcement that the Liberal Party of Canada will seek a fall election.
Michael Ignatieff, the party’s leader, said recently that the current government’s “time is up” and claims that he intends to force a non-confidence vote in Parliament as soon as possible.
If a fall federal election does occur it will be the fourth in five years.

Thanks to a trial recycling program in Saskatoon, this year it will be easier and cheaper than ever to get a hold of those great cheap finds.
The program, called New 2U, invites residents from certain neighbourhoods to put unwanted items on the curb on a certain day. Then residents from across the city are invited into the host neighbourhood to scan the streets for used treasures…

After years of minority governments, people have gotten used to constant talk of elections. But whether or not Canadians go to the polls this fall, the recently formed Pirate Party of Canada is vying for voters’ attention.
“A lot of people hear ”˜Pirate Party’ and assume that it’s all about ”˜get your content for free,’ ” said Tim Fretz, a graduate student in electrical and computer engineering at the University of Saskatchewan.

Students at the U of S can expect to pay more for less in upcoming years.
Tuition increased by three per cent between the 2008-09 and 2009-10 school years as part of the university’s effort to meet budgetary needs. Other measures, such as not replacing professors who are retiring, will mean that students will receive fewer class offerings and larger class sizes for their extra money.
