Pat Thompson took over 8th Street Books and Comics in 1994. Now, in its 26th year of operation, 8th Street Books has moved next door.
Located in the same building, but facing directly onto 8th Street, it may seem like a small change but Thompson says it’s making a huge difference.
“It’s been a boom to the business like you can’t believe,” said Thompson…

  • Outdoor rock shows celebrate summer

    By August 26, 2009

Around this time of year, a person looks back on the summer months in an attempt to recreate an accurate image of what has taken place over this brief interval. For me, most of the memories worth keeping are the times I have spent outside. I remember the summer as a series of tennis matches, drunken barbecues, days spent at the beach, highway drives and reading books on the balcony ”” these are the blissful, defining moments. Naturally, when I heard that Sonia Dickin was, for the second year in a row, putting on a massive, free outdoor show, I got excited. I couldn’t think of a better way to cap off these ephemeral summer months than to sit in the grass and listen to a bunch of my favourite local bands…

  • Zombies attack!

    By August 26, 2009

“As long as you’re soaked in blood and everything you’re wearing is bloody, I think you’ve done a good enough job,” said organizer Scott Jamison on how to dress like a zombie. He also encourages wearing clothes you’re not afraid to ruin.

The second annual Saskatoon Zombie Walk took place on Aug. 15. The zombies gathered at the Vimy Memorial downtown, then walked to the Broadway Theatre to watch a zombie flick…

  • Community garden losing land

    By August 26, 2009

One of the joys of summertime is the abundance of fresh garden vegetables.
Thanks to the many community gardens throughout the city, those without yard space are still able to grow their own. But the future looks uncertain for the Nutana Community Garden. Their lease on the current location behind the Broadway Roastery is up this year, and the land has been slated for condo development…

  • Hobos with hobbies

    By August 26, 2009

I will give money to panhandlers.
I have no issue with people who are down on their luck and need a few bucks to survive. I don’t even begrudge the ones who do it as a way to earn a living, because it beats working any day. And unlike most people, I don’t boycott panhandlers because they will just spend it on booze, anyway. It’s not because I believe that they’re actually trying to put together bus fare or they need a quarter for the phone, but because I spend my pay cheques on booze and therefore am not one to be casting stones…

  • Clinton’s summer vacation

    By August 26, 2009

Bill Clinton did something most ”” or at least one former U.S. president ”” would consider unthinkable; he flew all the way to North Korea to talk face to face with the country’s “Dear Leader” Kim Jong-il to negotiate the release of two imprisoned American journalists.
While this is a heroic move by the former U.S. president, I am left with some questions about what this means for America.

    Dear Sheaf,
I can’t thank you enough for the article on suicide that appeared in spring. My brother was suffering from depression and was having suicidal ideation when he came across the article. I remember him mentioning later when he did get treatment that he had come across the article and it helped him take steps to help himself (help phone numbers).
I can’t thank you enough for having the article and the resources mentioned . . . it just may have prevented another fatal statistic. He is currently getting the treatment and support he needs for his depression.
