Trying to sluff off some of the back-to-school blues and allow yourself one last week of summer? Me too. Unfortunately, we here at The Sheaf can’t do so much to roll back the unending march of time, but we can provide you with some of this year’s Welcome Week activities!
Welcome Week, brought to our wondrous campus by The University of Saskatchewan Students’ Union (USSU), will be running from Sept. 6 to Sept. 8 this year and takes place in the Bowl. Starting at 11 a.m. the green grounds of the campus will be packed with four food trucks, the ever-beloved beer gardens, and tents featuring all assortments of campus clubs.
At 11 a.m. on Wednesday Sept. 6 DJ Market Mall will be kicking off the festivities as he brings music for you to groove to in between your first few classes. He will be followed by DJ Charly Hustle at 2 p.m. who is sure to keep the good vibes going.
On Sept. 7. at 8 p.m. the USSU will be hosting their annual Car-less Drive-In in the Bowl. This year’s film of choice is the Academy Award-winning Shrek. Attendance is free and popcorn will be provided courtesy of RBC on Campus. If you’re planning to attend, think about bringing a warm blanket or a coat to cozy up under as you enjoy the movie. Trust me, those September evenings can be a lot colder than you would expect.
Welcome Week is of course always just the start of all assortments of events occurring on the USask campus during September.
On. Sept. 21, Finnish power metal band, Beast in Black, will be performing at Louis’ with the heavy-metal synthwave duo, Dance with the Dead, opening for them. If you enjoy anything reminiscent of the 1970s heavy metal craze or want to feel like you’re part of a mid-80s mosh pit then this will be the show for you. Tickets are $29.50 – doors open at 7 p.m.
If heavy metal and synth-centric music isn’t up to your taste, have no worries as on Sept. 22 the Vancouver indie-rock solo act, Destroyer, will be taking over the Louis’ stage alongside their opener, Wayfinding, an indie-rock trio from Edmonton, Alba.
Dan Bejar, the man behind Destroyer, has been dubbed “Rock’s Exiled King” by The Fader, whereas Wayfinding was called a “playfully clever and intellectually amusing, postmodern popcraft” by the Taste of Edmonton. If a night spent drinking, dancing and subsequently thinking about the complexities of life sounds ideal to you, then you should get your tickets before they are gone. Tickets are $30 – doors open at 7 p.m.
If sports are more up your alley be sure to make your way over to Griffiths Stadium on Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. for the Huskies homecoming football game. There is free admission for all USask students as long as you bring your student ID. So, be ready with your greenest greens and whitest whites to show your Huskie pride as the Huskies take on the Regina Rams for their second game of the season!
Hopefully something in this ramshackle list has piqued your interest, but if not don’t fret too much, there will be tons of events throughout the year for incoming and experienced students to attend — and we here at The Sheaf will keep you in the know.
