The nominations have been announced for Sirius XM’s 12th Annual Independent Music Awards and several Saskatoon bands are nominated. The awards celebrate the best in the Canadian and International independent music scene. This gives artists and bands that normally don’t get quite as much recognition a time to shine. However, by independent, they mean artists like Feist and bands like Mother Mother, so do not expect your favorite obscure Canadian folk punk band to make an appearance.
In addition to checking out past winners, you can view the current nominees on Sirius’ Indies website and vote to help decide who gets to take home this year’s awards. This is a perfect opportunity to not only support your favorite bands and Canadian music, but more specifically local music.
Here’s a quick rundown on the local bands nominated and what they are nominated for.
The Sheepdogs predictably racked up a number of nominations and are also set to perform at the awards show in Toronto later this month. They are nominated for a total of four awards including Single of the Year and Group or Duo of the Year.
Deep Dark Woods have a nomination for Folk/Roots Artists/Group or Duo of the Year.
Local metal heads Untimely Demise are nominated for Metal Artist/Group or Duo of the Year.
Library Voices from Regina have been nominated for Alternative Artist/Group or Duo of the Year.
There’s a great amount of musical talent coming not just from Saskatoon, but all of Canada and there’s definitely a good chunk being celebrated here. Make sure to vote and support the bands involved, and, more importantly, show your support for independent music.
The awards are set to take place on March 24 so be sure to get your votes in before then.
