The Huskies women’s soccer team handed the Alberta Pandas only their second loss of the season Oct. 2 with a 3-2 win at Foote Field in Edmonton.
After splitting goals in the first 10 minutes to open the game, the remainder of the first half was all Huskies as their three goals within the half proved too much for the Pandas.
Elizabeth Hudon scored in the second minute after beating Pandas keeper Kelti Biggs from inside the box.
Her goal was answered quickly by Alberta, however, as striker Heather Lund buried a low shot past Huskies keeper Marissa Wilford in the seventh minute.
It would be Alberta’s only major success in the half.
Hudon scored her second of the game in the 14th minute and assisted a Lindsay Manz goal in the 24th minute to give Saskatchewan a 3-1 lead going into the break. Hudon’s three points in the game put her at 8 points on the season and into a tie for first amongst all Canada West players.
The Pandas increased the pressure in the second half as they outshot the Huskies 11-4. They were unable, however, to score the two goals needed to tie the game up at 3.
Amanda Black’s goal in the 75th minute would be their second and final goal of the game.
The Huskies’ win, which moves them to 4-3-1 on the season, came after they lost 3-0 to Alberta on the previous day.
In that game, the Pandas scored three goals within the opening 35 minutes to secure the win.
The Pandas now sit second in the Canada West with a 6-2 record. The Huskies are in sixth place.
