The scholarship will be awarded for the greatest improvement to a disease-related article on the free online encyclopedia.
As of August 2011, there are over 3.7 million English articles on Wikipedia, with 23,000 related to medicine. Maintaining the vast encyclopedia falls to thousands of volunteers around the world who contribute through research, editing of articles and even contributing financially.
Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales recently hinted that the site was having difficulty attracting new editors, partly due to the “convoluted” editing structure.
Previous studies have shown that the vast majority of edits are made by a small minority of Wikipedia users.
