Nathan Thoen

The 19-year-old University of Saskatchewan student was disqualified in March from the provincial government’s “Saskatchewanderer” competition when a YouTube video surfaced in which he was heard swearing at a football game. The Saskatchewanderer travels the province and highlights interesting parts of Saskatchewan as a summer job.

At the time, it looked as though Thoen was close to winning the competition, given the size of his support on Facebook and having made it past initial rounds of voting. Ultimately, the job went to Regina’s Andrew Konoff.

However, the Prince Albert Daily Herald newspaper just announced that they have hired Thoen for the summer to keep up a travel blog for them.

“Nathan is a very outgoing guy and has a great sense of humour,” said Barry Glass, the managing editor of the Herald. “I was looking for a summer student to do exactly what Nathan wants to do, so it was a great fit.”

Thoen starts on June 1.
