The Design Editor is an artist at heart. Illustrations, portraits, infographics, charts and graphs are all in the official domain of the resident Sheaf artist. The Design Editor must have a strong sense for visual art as well as the imagination and artistic drive to produce a number of unique graphic ideas for every month. The Design Editor also serves as an artistic mentor for aspiring Sheaf artists and contributors. The Design Editor also decides on design of the paper, laying out the paper. A strong background and keen interest in typography, design, layout and graphics all play a key role in the Design Editor’s job.
A. Graphic, Layout and Design Responsibilities
•coordinating the layout and design of the newspaper to ensure maximum aesthetic, organization and readability
•ensuring that all visuals for the newspaper are properly adjusted for printing, in conjunction with the photo editor (photos should make up a 90% majority of images used weekly
•creating graphics when required
•suggesting new design ideas to keep the publication interesting and to visually entice readers to the text
•in cooperation with the photo editor, ensuring that assigned photos are ready for production, with deadlines determined in conjunction with the editor-in-chief
•in collaboration with the editor-in-chief and photo editor, selecting a cover image
