Regina Cougars striker Meagan Cormier scored the lone goal of the first match of the season for the Huskies women’s soccer team Sept. 8 in Regina.
Cormier tallied the game-winner in the 31st minute as Cougars defender Racquel Marshall lobbed the ball towards the Huskie goal. Cormier gained control of the ball and neatly snuck it past Huskies goalkeeper Marissa Struik.
The fourth-year striker dominated the game and led all players with nine shots. Cormier currently sits in second on the University of Regina women’s soccer squad’s all-time list in career goals (7) and points (17).
Saskatchewan’s best scoring opportunities came from rookie Erica Hindmarsh. The arts and science student aimed for the top corner in the beginning of the second half but was denied by Cougars goalkeeper Stephanie Possberg. In the 71st minute Hindmarsh got another hard shot away but Possberg made an acrobatic toe save that deflected the ball just over the top bar.
“We didn’t play to our potential, but I think it’s a game we can build on for the rest of the season,” Huskies midfielder Leanne Mylymok said. “We need to focus on finishing our opportunities and getting the ball to the back of the net. You can defend all you want but if you can’t score you’re not going to win.”
Possberg stopped seven shots to secure her first CIS shutout for the Cougars. Struik also saved seven shots, but it was the one Cormier shot that Struik didn’t stop that made the difference in the game.
The Huskies will host the Winnipeg Wemen Sept. 15 in their first home game of the season at Griffiths Stadium. Then play again Sept. 16 when Manitoba comes to town.
