He was elected to the position in May 2011 and was expected to serve a yearlong term.
Replacing him is current ISC member of students’ council Jared Brown, who has represented the organization at University Students’ Council for the past two years. Brown adopted the role at a late afternoon meeting on Jan. 9, held in the basement of McLean Hall.
“We need to band together as a council and take this on,” he said while speaking to fellow members of the ISC.
Brown takes the helm just months after a tense debate over a bylaw took place between the ISC and the USSU executive at the student union’s annual general meeting regarding how best to represent indigenous students on students’ council. However, after a proposal from Brown Jan. 5 at USC, an ad hoc committee with stakeholders from both sides will be formed Jan. 12 to reach an agreement on the bylaw, which will then be voted on at a special general meeting in February.
Brown feels that with his experience working on USC, he is now the logical choice for president, but also showed deep respect for Moccasin.
“Ryan is one of the smartest people I have ever met. He’s very keen, kind of like a wise old man,” he said.
Going forward, working in partnership with the Aboriginal Students’ Centre and USSU vice-president student affairs Alex Ferwerda, the ISC plans to host We Are Treaty Week in late February. Aboriginal Achievement Week and an academic awards gala are planned for later in the term.
The ISC convenes Mondays at 5:30 in McLean Hall, with meetings open to all students.
Correction: Changed the date of the We Are Treaty Week to late February, instead of early March.
