The Huskies women’s hockey team burst into the 2011-12 season Oct. 14 with a 7-1 victory at home over the Regina Cougars.
The Huskies, whose scorers were out in full force, saw several players’ names penned onto the score sheet.
Third-year Danny Stone led with two power play goals and one assist.
Kelsey Tulloch had one goal and one assist, Julie Paetsch had two assists and Sara White, Cara Wooster, Kandace Cook and Kelsey Fenton each had one goal.
It was only in the last two minutes that Regina was able to get on the board and spoil goaltender Mackenzie Rizos’s shutout efforts. With 1:59 left in the third period, Paige Wheeler slid the puck past Rizos during a scramble in front of the net.
Rizos stopped 23 of the Cougar’s 24 shots and was named second star for her effort.
Wooster was given the first star and Dogs’ captain Kristen Bews was named third.
Regina goaltender Jennifer Schmidt stopped 23 of 31 shots.
The win was the first game of a home-and-home series between the teams, which saw Saskatchewan take the second game 2-0 in Regina the following night.
In that game, the Huskies outshot the Cougars 34-16 but were still unable to beat goaltender Lisa Urban until the third period.
White scored a short-handed marker past Urban early in the third period after burying a rebound off a Julie Paetsch shot.
Six minutes later, Stone added the insurance for the Dogs.
Urban made 32 saves in the game and was named second star. Huskies goaltender Vanessa Frederick, the game’s first star, was perfect on the 16 shots she faced.
Stone, who was named the game’s first star, totalled four points on the weekend and is currently tied for first amongst the Canada West’s top scorers.
The Huskies men’s hockey team will host the Lethbridge Pronghorns at home Oct. 21 and 22 while the women’s team will travel to Lethbridge to face the Pronghorns.
