    The University of Saskatchewan Huskies wrestling squad picked up six medals at the annual Huskie Open Nov. 24. The Dogs hosted the tournament in the Education gym.

    The U of S Huskies wrestling squad is ready for another year of grappling. The team did a lot of recruitment in the off-season and the talented rookies entering the program, combined with proven veteran athletes, should make the Huskies national contenders.

    Ryan Myrfield is three-for-three at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport wrestling championships.

    The fourth-year Huskies captain won his third national gold medal Feb. 24 and 25 at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ont. after defeating Concordia University’s Scott Schiller in the men’s 72-kilogram final.

    This weekend, Saskatchewan’s men’s squad, which saw nine wrestlers put up top five finishes, landed third in the team standings with a combined 34 points — 11 points behind the hosting Regina Cougars who edged out Alberta by a single point for the title. Calgary finished fourth with 20 points while Winnipeg finished last with only 3 points.

    On the women’s side, the Huskies put up a strong showing despite their large number of rookies — four of the team’s eight wrestlers are in their first year of CIS competition.

    The University of Saskatchewan Huskies wrestling squad was lucky that Katie Dutchak wasn’t quite yet ready to step off the mat.

    The former captain of the Holy Cross High School team and first-year wrestler with the Dogs nearly moved to Missouri this year to take her rodeo career to the next level. However, after a bronze-medal performance in the Canadian junior wrestling finals last year — a finish that she considered lacklustre — she decided that she “wasn’t ready to be done wrestling.”

    Huskies wrestler Daniel Olver was honoured with two major pieces of hardware at the annual Huskie Salute on April 1. In his final year of eligibility, the fifth-year wrestler was awarded the E. Kent Phillips Trophy for male athlete of the year and the Rusty MacDonald Cup for all-round male athlete.
