On Nov. 14 the United Nations declared contraception a universal human right. A report from the United Nations Population Fund titled State of World Population 2012 declared that “governments, civil society, health providers and communities have the responsibility to protect the right to family planning for women across the spectrum, including those who are young or unmarried.”
But what does this really mean? The U.N.’s declaration has no legal ramifications, which raises the question, “So what?”

“That girl is such a slut.” It’s a common phrase to describe women and it’s one that needs to stop.
It may seem harmless at first, just something said after one too many drinks, but what lies beneath is a fear and resentment of female sexuality. In the simplest terms it’s an example of slut-shaming.

In 1988, Henry Morgentaler, an active pro-choice doctor, challenged Canada’s abortion restrictions in the Supreme Court of Canada, where they were found to be unconstitutional.
A year later, another case was brought to the Supreme Court in regards to fetal rights after a man tried to get an injunction to stop his ex-girlfriend from getting an abortion (Tremblay v. Daigle). The ruling declared that a fetus has no legal status in Canada as a person, in both Canadian common law and Quebec civil law.

Our generation’s girls have been raised on two keen ideals. The first as the ultimate and wise Spice Girls have taught us is “girl power.” It is simple and short and breathes life into the girls who remember the pigtails and six-inch platform runners fondly. The second is that feminists are man-hating lesbians; one must have an awful haircut and a lack of fashion sense to apply.

Recently, Graham Templeton of The Peak newspaper at Simon Fraser University wrote an opinion piece stating that he was offended by the very notion of a western rape culture, calling the premise sexist. His arguments lack insight or a nuanced understanding of the issues he disagrees with. They are offensive and detrimental to the efforts of those who are fighting to end sexual harassment and assault.
I think it’s important to define rape culture, because I don’t think Templeton understands it, or took the time to investigate the meaning.
