With voting set for March 28 and 29, the University of Saskatchewan Students’ Union is preparing for elections for dozens of positions in next year’s USSU executive and University Students’ Council.
In years past, the USSU only administered the elections for the executive positions, but following this year’s annual general meeting it will also assume responsibility for 23 other positions comprising the various colleges and student groups on campus that have representatives on council.

Once again, students are arguing about the University of Saskatchewan Students’ Union. Private information came to light in the Sheaf’s March 8 edition, which used anonymous sources to report both the complaint and the decision by University Students’ Council to not inform students of the matter.
There are three separate parties involved in the affair that need to be addressed: Ferwerda, council and the Sheaf. To quote an old East Indian tale, “Though each was partly in the right, all were in the wrong.”

Complaints about Alex Ferwerda’s workplace behaviour have been accumulating since the first term, as documents leaked to the Sheaf show. This is the second incident to come to light about Ferwerda, the University of Saskatchewan Students’ Union vice-president student affairs.

On Feb. 1, dozens of rallies took place at Canadian universities as part of a National Day of Action to reduce the costs of post-secondary education. The event was sponsored by the Canadian Federation of Students, a national student lobbying group, and organized by individual student unions affiliated with CFS.
The University of Saskatchewan Students’ Union, however, did not take part.

The University of Saskatchewan has a plan to double its number of childcare spaces by 2014, says Associate Vice-President Student Affairs David Hannah. The design, which consists of two separate components, is projected to cost between $4 and $5 million and would increase the university’s total licensed childcare spaces to 220, up from 110.
The first component of the plan includes the renovation and expansion of the current university daycare centre located in the Education Building and would add 46 spaces, all of which would be for children 30 months to 6 years old.

Following the University of Saskatchewan Students’ Union’s annual general meeting, international students and indigenous students on campus lack full representation on University Students’ Council.
At the Nov. 10 AGM for the USSU, an amendment to section 28 of the union’s bylaw was voted down that would have given the two groups on campus two councillors each. All student groups with more than 1,000 members get two councillors. Student groups with fewer members get one councillor.
