There’s been a lot of rape talk in the news and online recently, which is great, because rape talk is uncomfortable and hits too close to home for a lot of people, myself and this paper, as Ashley Hyshka’s Sept. 6 article illustrated, obviously included.

There are many ways to be victimized, from robbery to harassment to violent sexual assault. Once someone has been branded a victim, our society too often shifts blame from their attacker onto them, piling more problems on the victim’s shoulders.

There is something disturbing about the University of Saskatchewan’s treatment of reported sexual assault on campus.
Only one case of sexual assault has been reported on campus since the new year. That’s hardly an accurate representation of what’s happening to university students.

A six-week delay in notifying the campus community about a reported sexual assault has stirred up questions over the university’s policy when responding to violent attacks.
It was reported that alcohol and other drugs may have been involved in theassault. This incident was first reported to, and is being investigated by, the Saskatoon Police Service. The university is fully co-operating in this investigation.

Risking thousands of dollars on late-night cram sessions and last-minute essays can leave students feeling powerless and result in alcohol and drug addiction and, occasionally, suicidal thoughts. A new sexual assault prevention campaign is underway in Saskatoon, telling young men “Don’t be that guy.”
Saskatoon is the fifth city in Canada to promote the campaign that targets 19- to 25-year old males with bathroom posters in bars around town. The main drive is to tell men “to not take advantage of women when they are intoxicated, and not to intoxicate women for the purposes of sex,” said Heather Pocock, assistant director of the Saskatoon Sexual Assault and Information Centre.

I am offended. I so rarely get to say that, since being offended has a lot to do with self-identification as a victim and, as a middle-class white male, I really don’t have much opportunity to feel that way. However, the allegation that we live in some sort of “rape culture” offends me. It is a statement both empirically wrong and deeply sexist.
