Last February, in the final weeks of the 2011-12 season, the Huskies men’s volleyball team managed a string of three consecutive wins, their longest streak all season. However, it only pushed their team record to a meager 4-16 on the season, leaving them outside a playoff spot.

After an unsuccessful first half to the 2011-12 season, the Huskies men’s volleyball team is hoping their strong showing at the annual Enns Baxter Wealth Management Invitational tournament can turn their season around.
The EBWM invitational is an annual tournament hosted by Huskies men’s volleyball. Formerly known as the Brian Mallard tournament, the event has featured teams from Japan as well as the NCAA’s top division. This year’s tournament took place from Jan. 5 to 7 at the Physical Activity Complex and saw Saskatchewan take on the Calgary Dinos, McMaster Marauders and Laval Rouge et Or.

The University of Alberta Golden Bears snagged two wins from the Huskies men’s volleyball team this past weekend at the Physical Activity Complex. Meanwhile, a strong first set was the only positive to come out of the Huskies women’s volleyball team’s third straight losing weekend Nov. 11 and 12 at the PAC.
“We just didn’t execute,” said Huskie Matt Busse. “At the end of sets and all the way through, that’s what we need to work on.”

The Huskies volleyball teams did not win in their home-opening games Oct. 28 and 29, but they are still optimistic about the upcoming season.
Last season, the men’s and women’s teams finished the year with a combined five wins. But with emerging young players and new coaching, the Dogs look to improve upon last year’s dismal finish.
