The University of Saskatchewan Huskies football team was hit hard Aug. 24 in a 26-21 non-conference loss to the visiting University of Guelph Gryphons at Griffiths Stadium. Six Huskies, including the squad’s first- and second-string tailbacks, left the field with injuries.

Huskies football offensive lineman Ben Heenan will join two other CIS players Jan. 21 as they compete in the 87th East-West Shrine game in St. Petersburg, Fla.
The game, which raises funds for Shriners Hospital for Children, features 100 of the United States’ top college players and acts as a showcase for future NFL and CFL talent. Every year since 1985, two or three CIS players are also invited to the game.

The Huskies gave all they had in the Nov. 5 Canada West semifinal match-up against the UBC Thunderbirds, but saw their playoff dreams dashed by the number six ranked team in Canadian university football.
The game played at Thunderbird Stadium in Vancouver was a back-and-forth brawl that started slow but picked up momentum in the second half, ending with a 27-22 final score.

After an absolute romping of the Alberta Golden Bears, the Huskies landed in third place in the Canada West standings and will travel to Vancouver this weekend to take on the second-place University of British Columbia Thunderbirds in a conference semifinal match.

Few teams can figure out how to win when they fumble the ball nine times in one game, but the University of Saskatchewan Huskies weren’t afraid to try on Oct. 22 under the lights of Mosaic Stadium in Regina.
The Huskies, who were lucky that the Regina Rams only recovered three of their nine fumbles, barely hung on to clinch a playoff spot in a 16-15 victory over the Rams.

Despite the idea of private ownership constantly surrounding the University of Saskatchewan Huskies football team, Huskie Athletics says it is something that has never seriously been considered.
David Dube of the team’s top supporters and his donations, valuing over $1 million, have made Huskies’ home games the most electrifying in the team’s history and help draw in record crowds. These donations include the new stands at Griffiths Stadium, the equipment in the weight room of the team’s new clubhouse and the fireworks at every home game.

The Huskies are hoping that their luck on home turf continues Oct. 14 when they line up against the league-leading Calgary Dinos for their final home game of the season.
Saskatchewan has yet to lose inside Griffiths Stadium this year, but they will be greatly tested by the undefeated Dinos — earlier this year, the Dinos beat the Dogs 38-24 in Calgary.
