    Brett Ward doesn’t always score goals, but when he does he makes sure they are game winners in triple overtime.

    Ward’s shot from the point in the sixth period of the third and deciding game of the Canada West final March 11 at Rutherford Rink found its way through screened University of Calgary Dinos netminder Dustin Butler’s pads and pushed the University of Saskatchewan Huskies to a 2-1 win and their first conference title since 2007.

    This weekend, Saskatchewan’s men’s squad, which saw nine wrestlers put up top five finishes, landed third in the team standings with a combined 34 points — 11 points behind the hosting Regina Cougars who edged out Alberta by a single point for the title. Calgary finished fourth with 20 points while Winnipeg finished last with only 3 points.

    On the women’s side, the Huskies put up a strong showing despite their large number of rookies — four of the team’s eight wrestlers are in their first year of CIS competition.

    The Victoria Vikes kept two former first-place finishers off the podium Nov. 12 as the Huskies fell short of winning their first-ever Canada West women’s cross-country title.

    Fifth-year Huskies Jodi Souter and Caitlin Warkentin, who had both won the conference race in the past, finished fourth and sixth, respectively, at the Canada West championships last weekend at Laval University.

    After taking 2010 off from university competition, Jodi Souter has returned this year to make the Huskies women’s cross country team a contender for the Canada West title.

    Hailing from the small town of Pleasantdale, Sask., Souter had a late start in cross country when she began to run competitively in her grade 12 year in 2005.
