    The student group Women in the Legislature, or WiL, will hold a panel discussion at Louis’ Pub next week to discuss the role of women in politics.

    Panelists will be Loleen Berdahl, professor with the political studies department; Jennifer Campeau, Saskatchewan Party MLA for Saskatoon Fairview; and Judy Junor, former NDP MLA for Saskatoon Eastview.

    WiL is a non-partisan, student-run initiative to educate students on women’s under-representation in legislatures across the country and inspire more women to become politically active.

  • BRIEF: Teachers’ group disappointed with Harper’s choice for Canada Excellence Research Chair board

    The Canadian Association of University Teachers reacted angrily to the newly-appointed co-chair of the Canada Excellence Research Chair program selection board. Stephen Harper’s federal government named Shirley Tilghman, president of Princeton University, to the post, drawing criticism from CAUT.

    “While the President of Princeton University is undoubtedly a distinguished academic… there is no shortage of Canadian university presidents and other distinguished academics at Canadian universities who could more appropriately have filled the role” as co-chair for the Canadian program, said a letter signed by CAUT President Wayne Peters and Executive Director James Turk.

  • Huskies men’s volleyball take silver in mid-season tournament

    After an unsuccessful first half to the 2011-12 season, the Huskies men’s volleyball team is hoping their strong showing at the annual Enns Baxter Wealth Management Invitational tournament can turn their season around.

    The EBWM invitational is an annual tournament hosted by Huskies men’s volleyball. Formerly known as the Brian Mallard tournament, the event has featured teams from Japan as well as the NCAA’s top division. This year’s tournament took place from Jan. 5 to 7 at the Physical Activity Complex and saw Saskatchewan take on the Calgary Dinos, McMaster Marauders and Laval Rouge et Or.

  • BRIEF: Heenan to suit up for Shrine game

    Huskies football offensive lineman Ben Heenan will join two other CIS players Jan. 21 as they compete in the 87th East-West Shrine game in St. Petersburg, Fla.

    The game, which raises funds for Shriners Hospital for Children, features 100 of the United States’ top college players and acts as a showcase for future NFL and CFL talent. Every year since 1985, two or three CIS players are also invited to the game.

  • BRIEF: Peter MacKinnon named officer of the Order of Canada

    utgoing University of Saskatchewan President Peter MacKinnon was recently named an officer of the Order of Canada “for his contributions to education and for his commitment to innovation and research excellence.”

    The announcement, which included 66 new appointments, was made by Gov. Gen. David Johnston on Dec. 30. MacKinnon, who will complete his tenure as U of S President at the end June, was the only selection from Saskatchewan this year.

  • USSU still dealing with fallout from AGM

    Following the University of Saskatchewan Students’ Union’s annual general meeting, international students and indigenous students on campus lack full representation on University Students’ Council.

    At the Nov. 10 AGM for the USSU, an amendment to section 28 of the union’s bylaw was voted down that would have given the two groups on campus two councillors each. All student groups with more than 1,000 members get two councillors. Student groups with fewer members get one councillor.
