Text-matching technology is currently under scrutiny at the University of Alberta, with the department of biological sciences’ plagiarism checker the latest subject in a long discussion about academic integrity on campus.
The aptly branded “Plagiarism Checker” — a mandatory text-matching tool used by the biological sciences department since September — is inciting controversy after the department’s decision to go ahead with the technology last year left students unhappy with the lack of communication about the service.

As a child, Kalamity Hildebrandt was put on diet pills by her doctor in order to lose weight. By age nine she was bulimic, which progressed to the point where she was throwing up blood in her teenage years. By 19, she could barely function emotionally in the world because of her overwhelming fear of harassment.
Hildebrandt’s view on being fat was changed by fat activism, the social justice movement that believes that, just like any other discrimination, oppression of people because of their weight is unacceptable and should be fought against.

With 2012 convocation only weeks away, future graduates are looking at a grim job market as young workers have been the worst affected by the past recession, according to a recent study by TD Economics.
Those between the ages of 20 and 24 have fared better than those in the 15 to 19 bracket, but job recovery is still dismal for all young workers though the recession has ended. And 175,000 young workers have left the labour market since the start of the recession — meaning they just stopped looking. Youth unemployment now stands at 14.5 per cent, double that of the regular population.

On Feb. 14, the Copyright Modernization Act (Bill C-11), was submitted to committee for review and amendments. The bill aims to update copyright laws last altered in 1997 and make breaking digital locks illegal.

Over 200,000 people took to the streets of Montreal on March 22 to protest tuition increases, many of whom were students from universities across Quebec.
The Concordia University delegation, which led the way for the better part of the three-hour event, congregated near the Hall building around 12 p.m. Over 500 students then began to proceed down Ste-Catherine Street lead by Concordia Student Union vice-president external Chad Walcott and president Lex Gill.
