It was the combination of an established veteran and a motivated rookie that led the Huskies women’s basketball team to a bronze medal March 3 and 4 at the Canada West Final Four tournament in Regina.
The veteran came in the form of the Dogs’ best player throughout the regular season, Katie Miyazaki. The fifth-year guard not only won her third-straight Canada West defensive player of the year award, but also earned a conference first team all-star mention for her strong performance this year.

This weekend, Saskatchewan’s men’s squad, which saw nine wrestlers put up top five finishes, landed third in the team standings with a combined 34 points — 11 points behind the hosting Regina Cougars who edged out Alberta by a single point for the title. Calgary finished fourth with 20 points while Winnipeg finished last with only 3 points.
On the women’s side, the Huskies put up a strong showing despite their large number of rookies — four of the team’s eight wrestlers are in their first year of CIS competition.

A 23-point Saskatchewan lead after the first quarter of action put last weekend’s first men’s basketball game out of reach for the Bobcats almost immediately. Though Brandon actually outscored Saskatchewan by one point in the remainder of the game, the Dogs easily won 92-70. Later, the Huskies women’s basketball team nearly doubled the points of their opponents Friday, Jan. 27 at the PAC, as they dominated the league’s worst team, the Brandon University Bobcats. Saskatchewan downed the visitors 81-42.

It was a controversial finish.
On Jan. 21, in the second of two games the Huskies women’s hockey team played against the visiting Manitoba Bisons, the Dogs lost 4-3 in a shootout.
Both teams had to send five shooters before Bisons forward Nellie Minshull scored the only goal of the breakaway contest. Minshull, however, fumbled the puck on her way to the net and had to stop to reach back and retrieve the puck before she fired it through Huskies goaltender Mackenzie Rizos’ five-hole. The crowd and the Huskies bench erupted when the goal was allowed, thinking that the play should have been considered dead when Minshull was forced to stop and turn back. After some referee deliberation the goal was still counted, giving Manitoba the extra point and the win.

Few teams can figure out how to win when they fumble the ball nine times in one game, but the University of Saskatchewan Huskies weren’t afraid to try on Oct. 22 under the lights of Mosaic Stadium in Regina.
The Huskies, who were lucky that the Regina Rams only recovered three of their nine fumbles, barely hung on to clinch a playoff spot in a 16-15 victory over the Rams.

The fireworks in Griffiths Stadium provided more of a spark than the University of Saskatchewan Huskies offence Oct. 14 in the Dogs 20-8 loss to the University of Calgary Dinos.
“I think we dropped five or six passes. We didn’t run hard, we didn’t block anybody, and it was pretty much a total offensive collapse,” said Huskies coach Brian Towriss.
