I like to party.

It’s hard not to party living in Saskatoon, our funky little pinprick on the map of planet Earth. It seems like there is always a good reason or excuse to slip into those mischievous party shoes that fit us all so well. One splendid reason to get dressed up and messed up is the upcoming Snow Ball at Louis’ Pub on Jan. 21.

Saskatoon offers something fun to do every night of the week. Whether we’re persuaded by cheap drinks, live music or some typical womp-womp D.J., all of us relentlessly indulge.

The Snow Ball is a formal extravaganza that gives us all the excuse to doll up and party like it’s 1959. Louis’ will be transformed into a ’50s ballroom, with white cloth, black lights and elegant décor. Guests can walk the red carpet, get their photos taken and groove their way into the ballroom, where there will be live music and oldies but goodies mixed by your pal D.J Charly Hustle. It will give us all a chance to divert ourselves from the typical weekend party agenda.

Some of us are on a constant, desperate search for social acceptance, battling to be part of the coolest party in town. Others just go with the flow, happily stumbling home from wherever the prairie tide took them that night. We have our pubs, our clubs, our party houses and lounges all desperately trying to be the coolest or hottest spot. Some win, some lose. Regardless, all of these places inevitably offer the same thing — an environment for us Saskatonians to socialize, and consume as a community. At this year’s Snow Ball we can all party hard in a classy, luxurious fashion without pretending we are in West Hollywood or Las Vegas. Rather, we celebrate and acknowledge the fact that we are in Saskatoon and that it is a wicked place.

It’s always nice to do something out of the ordinary. Dress up like it’s your prom night and go back into time, back in an era where folks partied a little differently. When there was no dress code people just felt good dressing up. A time when the moment is what mattered, rather than now where it seems like we are infatuated with anticipation leading up to an event or party and when the day arrives, we are struck with disappointment when we realize we are doing the same thing we did last week. It’s about time for a positive change.

Press your suits, dust off those high heels, find a date or a group of pals and treat yourselves to a wonderful evening.
