It was a difficult weekend for the Huskies women’s basketball teams as they suffered consecutive losses to the University of Victoria Vikes.
On Oct. 30, the two teams faced off in Saskatoon with the Vikes jumping out to an early 25-18 lead in the first quarter, but the Huskies closed in on their opponents ending the half with a 40-39 score in the Vikes favour. Saskatchewan managed to get a slight lead of 57-55 but when the Huskies offence fell away in the final frame, the mere 17 points from the Vikes were enough to secure a win.
Victoria’s Carmen Lapthorne completed her fourth and final three-pointer to give the Vikes an 11 point lead. In the end, the Vikes defeated the Huskies with a 72-65 final score, keeping the Vikes perfect record at 4-0 and first place in the Canada West conference. The Huskies remain at 2-2 in the middle of the standings.
Reactions for the men’s basketball were mixed this weekend as the Huskies took on the University of Victoria Vikes men’s team.
On Oct. 29 the Huskies took control early in the first quarter with a 32-25 lead and refused to give back the lead the rest of the game. It was clear the starting five men were the force needed to secure a win. Of the 95 points scored, 88 of them came from the group of Jamelle Barrett, Rejean Chabot, Michael Leiffers, Nolan Brudehl and Duncan Jones. It was the way these five worked together that made the win of 95-81 easier.
By second day of play on Oct. 30, the Vikes were not willing to allow even the best of the Huskies to stop them from leaving completely defeated. Neither team had much to offer in terms of offence this game, with only 13 points each in the first quarter. Saskatchewan’s first basket came from Jamelle Barrett at the 6:03 mark. Victoria’s victory came courtesy of their long distance shooting and support from the bench, with 34 points coming from their reserves. The Huskies subs only added nine points to the board, eight of which came from Chris Unsworth. The final score rested at 78-67, bumping the Vikes to 2-2 for the season, which is where the Huskies stand as well.
Huskies women’s soccer completed two games this weekend in Saskatoon, with a goal from Daniela Fuenzalida gaining a 1-0 win over the UBC Thunderbirds on Oct. 30. Both teams sit with records of 7-5-1, tied with 22 points to sit in third place. With only four teams making the playoffs, the Huskies needed a win against the second place Trinity Western University Spartans to qualify for a place in one of the final two playoff spots.
In a three way tie for third place including the Huskies, UBC Thunderbirds and the University of Fraser Valley Cascades, the Huskies hit the field at noon on Oct. 31 against the Spartans with a must-win attitude. Unfortunately for the Huskies, the Spartans were able to capitalize on two mistakes by Saskatchewan allowing them to secure a 2-0 victory.
The Spartans continue on to the final four as the second place team, with Fraser Valley in third, UBC in fourth and the hosting University of Alberta Pandas in first. The Huskies finished their season with a 7-6-1 record.
Huskies men’s and women’s hockey had a bye-week and were idle over the past weekend.
