Ladysmith, B.C., is home to two notable ladies. The first is Pamela Anderson, who needs no introduction. The second is Stef Lang, an honest and humble songwriter whose career is just beginning to get off the ground.
With the recent release of her full-length debut, Stef Lang is prepped for a month-long cross-country expedition that began in Duncan, B.C., on Aug. 30.
“We’re doing all of our island tour dates first,” said Lang. “We’ve been booking this tour over the last few months and now it is finally happening.”
The work that went into planning the tour is coming to an end and the real work can begin.
“There were months and months of phone calls and emails and now we can start touring. We are very excited,” she said.
After the island dates are complete, Lang will continue taking her band east to eventually play the U of S’s Welcome Week in the Bowl prior to the anticipated return of Fred Penner to Louis’.
“I will most definitely be attending the Fred Penner concert,” commented Lang. “We actually get him two nights in a row because he plays the U of R the next night.”
She describes her music as a cross between pop and rock with some folk mixed in. Having listened to a few of her songs, it could be described as cheeky pop, as Stef Lang is far from being a fame mongering auto-tune sensation, and that’s a good thing.
Lang’s single “Mr. Immature” is a classic angry breakup song and also the subject of her first video, shot in New York City.
For a girl from the West Coast, she said it was exciting to visit and work in New York.
“I had been wanting to go there for a long time,” said Lang. “And I happened to be in Toronto and my producer’s cousin offered to shoot the video so we just spent the whole day shooting the video guerilla style around New York.”
Lang has released her full-length album called The Underdog, and is lucky enough to get that little warning that marks her album “explicit” on iTunes.
People who are unfamiliar with Lang’s music can expect an entertaining and engaging show.
“Our shows are very high energy,” said Lang. “But also personal and intimate. We like connecting with fans and if people want to reach out to us, we’re online.”
Keep an eye out for Stef Lang during Welcome Week on Sept. 8.
