Whether it is an “I love you,” breakfast in bed, chocolates, playing card games or a long hug, people understand love in many different ways.
The 5 Love Languages is a book written by Gary Chapman, who was inspired by his experiences as a marriage counsellor, and it teaches how to “effectively love another person.” This Valentine’s Day, explore the ways in which you can give love. Get to know you and your loved one’s love language to get daily everyday interactions and date nights done right.
1. Words of affirmation
Date idea: “Open when…” letters
This one is for the couples in LDR — long-distance relationships. Make a stack of letters with instructions for when your significant other can open one over a video call. Start with “Open when it’s Valentine’s Day” and continue with ones like “Open when you’re sad” or “Open when you miss me.” The possibilities are endless and all of them are sure to put a smile on your partner’s face.
Words hold so much meaning, as this love language proves. Seemingly small phrases that show appreciation and encouragement go a long way for people who want to receive love in this way.
2. Acts of service
Date idea: Work on a project together
Going out of your way to attend to someone’s needs, especially if they’re a busybody, can mean a lot. Life gets messy, so if it takes cleaning someone’s room or making a simple pancake breakfast for them, then why not go ahead and do it?
There are many ways you can do this. You can help revamp their bedroom with some fresh paint and decor. You can drop by with art supplies and get creative together. Whatever it is, it should be centered around their likes, interests and day-to-day activities. As long as you are there with a helping hand, you are sure to get in your partner’s good books.
3. Receiving gifts
Date idea: Scavenger hunt
Big or small, receiving gifts feels good because it reminds of a time where you were a kid, excitedly unwrapping a package to see what’s inside. It doesn’t have to be a 10K Cartier bracelet or an expensive dinner — it could be something as simple as a pearl hair clip or a bag of candy.
Make gift-giving fun by hiding beautifully-wrapped gifts around the house — bonus points if you make it themed and get dressed up. There’s nothing better than playing like a little youngin again. Remember, it’s always the thought that counts.
4. Quality time
Date idea: Winter activities
How convenient it is for Valentine’s Day to fall in the winter time — there are so many date ideas for quality time. Try out sledding, skating or snowboarding if both of you are thrill-seekers. Building gingerbread houses or baking chocolate chip cookies are good options if you’re looking for indoor activities. But it can be simple too, like drinking hot cocoa while having a conversation — it doesn’t get better than that.
Time is a luxury and people who understand love this way treat it as such. If someone wants nothing but to lay in bed and cuddle for eight hours while you marathon your favourite movie together, keep ‘em. It might just save you both from catching ‘rona.
5. Physical touch
Date idea: Walk while holding hands
Comfort and warmth — that’s what a touch from someone you adore can give. This can be sexual or non-sexual, either way it is something that gives a person assurance that they are loved.
This date idea is simple and sweet. Find a nice trail in your area with a good view of the sunrise or sunset and go on a walk together while holding hands. Romance comes alive with a touch and a kiss, so make sure this remains on your agenda, no matter what your S.O.’s love language is.
