Eight Huskies track and field athletes took home medals from the 2013 Bison Classic in Winnipeg Feb. 1 and 2.

The Huskies finished third among varsity squads in the women’s team standings, while the men’s Huskies landed in fourth place at the 2013 Bison Classic, hosted by the University of Manitoba Feb. 1 and 2.

The team won eight individual medals at the meet, two golds, two silvers and four bronze.

Leading the charge for the green and white men’s squad was reigning Canada West champion triple jumper Cossy Nachilobe. His leap of 13.76-metres garnered a gold medal in the triple jump, and while his 6.41-metre long jump attempt wasn’t enough to crack the podium, it was enough for sixth spot.

300-metre runner Morgan Sawatzky brought home gold for the women. Sawatzky clocked in at 39.65 seconds, over two-tenths of a second faster than anyone else. On the men’s side of the 300-metre, the Huskies’ Alex Fedyk picked up silver with a time of 34.71 seconds.

Veteran middle-distance runner Amanda Banks brought home a silver medal with her efforts in the 600-metre race.

Runners Tye Buettner (1000-metre), Gabrielle Edwards in the (1500-metre), Kyle Donsberger (300-metre) all picked up bronze medals, as did sprinter Ryan Graf, who ran the 60-metre dash in a lightning 6.91 seconds.

The Huskies next chance to prove themselves will be at the non-conference meet in Regina Feb. 8 and 9 at the Queen City Indoor Games. The meet will be the final non-conference event before Regina hosts the conference championships Feb. 22 and 23.
