The Huskies men’s hockey team scored 10 goals in two games to down the Regina Cougars twice this past weekend.
The home-and-home series saw the Dogs win 5-2 in Regina on Oct. 14 and 5-4 the next night in Saskatoon.
In the first game, the Huskies scored three goals within the opening five minutes. Garrett Thiessen scored at the 1:35 mark while Dogs captain and former Cougar Kyle Ross buried the team’s second goal only two minutes later. Shaun Vey added the third less than a minute later.
Vey’s goal prompted Regina to replace starting goaltender A.J. Whiffen with backup Lucas Gore.
The switch proved beneficial — Gore stopped 39 shots — but was not enough to mount a Cougars comeback as Kyle Bortis and Chad Suer of the Dogs both scored in the second period on the power play.
Regina would bury two in the third period but it would be too little too late for the Cougars.
Regina, who were outshot by the Huskies 41-15 in the first two periods, recorded 10 shots to the Dogs’ five in the third period. They were able to carry this third period momentum into the second game.
While the Huskies were still able to pull out the win, the second game — which was also the Dogs’ home opener — saw Regina outshoot Saskatchewan 28-21 and saw both sides exchange leads several times throughout the game.
After a slow first period, the Dogs got off to a 2-0 lead early in the second with goals from Brennan Bosch and Suer. Regina would take the lead shortly thereafter, however, by scoring three goals in three minutes midway through the frame.
Unfortunately for his former team, Ross wouldn’t let the Cougars keep that lead. He buried a goal only 33 seconds after Regina’s third goal to tie the game up going into the third period.
Regina would regain its lead early in the third, but two quick goals only 29 seconds apart from Bortis would steal the game for the Huskies.
The win moved the Huskies to 3-0 on the season and into second place in the Canada West. They sit two points behind the 4-0 Manitoba Bisons but have a game in hand.
Regina fell to last place in the conference with a 0-4 record.
Bortis recorded three goals and two assists on the weekend and now sits atop the Canada West with nine points this season.
