Andrew Hood of the Alberta Golden Bears could not be stopped as the Huskies’ winless streak continued Oct. 1 and 2 in Edmonton.
The Dogs faced the Bears twice this past weekend, losing 2-1 in the first game and tying the second game 1-1. Hood, a midfielder who was switched to striker for the weekend in order to spark Alberta’s offence, scored all three goals for the Bears.
In both games, Alberta got off to quick starts as Hood scored all his goals within the first half. In the first game, he buried one past Saskatchewan keeper Mark Diakiw in the 10th minute and potted another in the 30th minute after taking a through ball from Cameron Schmidt and dribbling past Diakiw. In the second game, he scored in the 14th minute after tapping in a shot that had bounced off the cross bar.
Rookies Bobbi Nicholat and Brett Levis were the only ones to score for the Huskies. Nicholat scored in the 90th minute of the first game while Levis scored in the 68th of the second game.
The win moved Alberta one point ahead of the Huskies to sit fifth in the Canada West conference while the tie marked the fifth winless game in a row for Saskatchewan. They have not won since Sept. 17.
Huskies all-star striker Jerson Barandica-Hamilton, who started the season off strong, has not scored in the Dogs’ last three games. Josh Northey, the Canada West player of the year last year, has not scored since Saskatchewan’s league opener on Sept. 10.
