Here’s what you’ve missed so far, and what you have to look forward to in the rest of the 2023-24 season!
This has been an exciting season for your USask Huskies. Here’s what you need to know about what they’ve achieved so far and what they will be striving for in the second half of the term.
Women’s Hockey
The women’s hockey team will face off next at Merlis Belsher Place against the Trinity Western University Spartans on Friday, Jan. 12th at 7 p.m. The Canada West Playoffs will begin on Friday, Feb. 16th, with the Huskies currently ranked 4th in the league. The Huskies will be hosting the Canada U SPORTS Championship in Women’s Hockey at Merlis Belsher Place on Mar. 14th – 17th, so be sure to get your tickets before they’re gone!
Men’s Hockey
The men’s hockey team is playing next in Langley, B.C. against the Trinity Western University Spartans on Friday, Jan. 12th at 9 p.m. The Huskies are currently ranked 5th in the league, and are working towards the Canada West Playoffs beginning Friday, Feb. 16th. In recent news, third-year defenseman Gunner Kinniburgh was selected for the U SPORTS All-Star team’s roster in December.
Women’s Basketball
The women’s basketball team is having an incredible season.With 10 wins and 0 losses by the end of the fall semester, they are currently ranked 1st in the league. Their next game will be at home at the Physical Activity Complex (PAC) against the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat, at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 12th.
Men’s Basketball
The men’s basketball team will be playing next at the PAC against the University of British Columbia Okanagan on Friday, Jan. 12th at 6 p.m. The Canada West basketball playoffs will take place during the weekend of Feb. 22nd for both the men’s and women’s teams.
Women’s Volleyball
The women’s volleyball team is aiming for a surge coming off of a five-game losing streak at the end of the fall semester. They play next against the Mount Royal Cougars on Friday, Jan. 12th at 9 p.m. in Calgary.
Men’s Volleyball
The men’s volleyball team will also play next in Calgary against the Mount Royal Cougars at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 12th. The Huskies are currently ranked 2nd in the league, and are striving for the Canada West playoffs that will begin on Friday, Feb. 23rd.
Women’s Soccer
The women’s soccer team had a strong end to their season in November, taking home the bronze medal at the Canada West Championships. Their final match against the University of Victoria Vikes went through two overtime periods and a penalty shootout, which the Huskies won 4-2.
Men’s Soccer
The men’s soccer team ended their season finale with a 1-0 loss to the University of Alberta Golden Bears. The annual Bateman Cup has ended in a draw for the last three years, but this year the Golden Bears were able to score over the Huskies..
Football
The Huskies lost to the University of Alberta Golden Bears 17-40 in the Hardy Cup Semi-Finals to end the 2023 season. In November it was announced that six players on the Huskies team have been named Canada West All-Stars: George Idoko, Nick Wiebe, Nixen Voll, Katley Joseph, Daniel Perry, and Nathan Jule.
Track and Field
The Huskies’ track and field season will begin with the Sanderson Classic on Friday, Jan. 12th. In March 2023, the Huskies women’s team took home bronze at the U SPORTS Championship.
Cross Country
The Huskies’ 2023 cross country season wrapped up with the U SPORTS Championship in November in London, ON. Kaitlyn Harrison finished 5th with a strong showing in the race.
Wrestling
The Huskies’ wrestling athletes will compete next at the University of Alberta Golden Bears & Pandas Duals on Friday, Jan. 12th. The Huskie Duals took place on Friday, Nov. 24th, 2023, during which the Huskies earned a 50-34 win over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns and the University of Alberta Golden Bears & Pandas.
