Ten Huskies participated at the CIS Championships in Edmonton Feb. 26–28 and the U of S earned four medals, including one gold.
Josh Bodnarchuk won the lone gold medal for the Dogs as he took top spot in the 54-kilogram weight class and for his efforts he was named CIS Rookie of the Year. In the 48-kilogram division, Annie Monteith claimed the silver and Dylan Bray earned his second career silver in his final CIS match. The Huskies’ final medal came courtesy of Jacob Phillips, a bronze in the 120-kilogram weight class.
Track & Field
On Feb. 27 and 28 in Winnipeg, the Canada West track and field championships took place with the Huskies taking home nine medals.
In the team portion of the meet, the women’s team finished third with 58 points while the Trinity Western University Spartans defended their title with 100 points. On the men’s side, Saskatchewan had 39 points, earning them fifth place, while the University of Calgary Dinos took home the banner with 84 points.
There were eight individual medal winners and a single team medal won. Jared Olson won a bronze in men’s 60-metre hurdles and Graham Black took home gold in the men’s 300-metre sprint. The women’s team hauled in six medals at the competition. Lauren Taylor claimed two silver medals; one each in women’s pentathlon and high jump. Jessica Buettner earned bronze in shot-put, Courtney Erickson won silver in pole vault, Astrid Nyame claimed silver in the 60-metre hurdles and Olena Olenick claimed gold in weight throw. The men’s 4×200 metre relay team took home the silver.
