The Huskies wrestling team grappled their way to eight medals at the Cougar Open on Jan. 11 in Regina, Sask. The team brought home five gold, one silver and two bronze. The tournament hosted varsity teams from the Universities of Saskatchewan, Regina, Winnipeg and Alberta.
The Huskies men and women each finished second in team competition. The men finished with 21 points behind the University of Regina Cougars’ 30 while the women finished with 24, one point shy of the the Cougars’ 25.
Annie Monteith won the gold medal in the 48-kilogram weight class and was also named the Outstanding Female Wrestler of the tournament. Katie Dutchak claimed gold in the 51-kilogram weight class and teammate Taylor Follensbee won in the 72-kilogram division.
On the men’s side, Shane Johnson and Dylan Bray placed first in the 54-kilogram and 57-kilogram divisions respectively. The lone silver medal went to Andrew Johnson in the 82-kilogram division.
Team captain Theo Dow took home a bronze in the men’s 57-kilogram weight class and Cassidy Beilhartz finished third in the 63-kilogram division.
The Huskies host the Canada West Championship on Feb. 14-15.
