The Huskies men’s soccer team treated their fans to two wins this past weekend as they swept the University of Alberta Golden Bears at home.
The Dogs downed the Bears 2-0 on Oct. 5 and 2-1 on Oct. 6, improving to a 7-3-0 record on the season. The wins also keep the Huskies atop the Prairie Division rankings with the closest team, the Calgary Dinos, trailing five points behind.
The Huskies opened the series by shutting out the Golden Bears for a 2-0 triumph. Both of the Dogs’ goals came in the second half of the match.
The Dogs had a big chance to score in the first half when David Brown was awarded a free kick from 20 yards out but Golden Bears keeper Jay Vetsch was able to get his hands on the ball and keep the score tied at 0-0.
The Bears had to work hard to fend off the Huskies offence in the first half. Twice the home team was within five yards of the net but couldn’t get a shot off either time. The Huskies outshot the visiting team 5-1 in the frame but weren’t able to find the net to break the stalemate.
Rookie defender Kyle Moore scored his first Canadian Interuniversity Sport goal to put the Huskies on the board in the 51st minute of second half. Moore headed Jordian Farahani’s free kick into the top left corner of the net just out of Vetsch’s reach.
In the 80th minute Garrett Peters added another goal when he blasted a ball past Vetsch. Peters was assisted by Eoin McFadden. The two goals were enough to secure the Huskies victory.
Huskies keeper Michal Bandula recorded two saves in the shutout while Vetsch made six. The Dogs controlled the ball throughout the match, outshooting the Bears 13-5.
Sunday’s game began with missed chances for both squads. Luigi Bekwayo missed a penalty shot in the 35th minute after Brett Levis was brought down in front of the net and the Bears couldn’t capitalize off two free kicks of their own. The first half ended in a 0-0 deadlock.
The Bears finally broke through in the 52nd minute when Niko Saler knocked a penalty kick into the net past Bandula.
Levis tied the game with his sixth goal of the season. His free kick from 19 yards out slid into the bottom left corner of the net and leveled the score at one apiece. Seven minutes later a Huskie player was tripped in the box and David Brown netted the game winner off the ensuing penalty kick.
The Huskies had not won back to back games against the Bears since 2000.
Bandula made four saves on the day while Vetsch stopped seven on the other end of the field. The Huskies outshot the Bears 22-15.
The Huskies will play their final home matches against the University of Victoria Vikes on Oct. 12 and the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades on Oct. 13.
