Tennis Canada and Tennis Saskatchewan are teaming up to promote tennis on campus. Tennis Canada is looking to increase interest and participation in tennis across university campuses by hosting their Campus Tennis Challenge, in cities across Canada. They held a Campus Tennis Challenge was held March 29-31, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and later this month Saskatoon will host a university tennis competition for universities and colleges across Saskatchewan.
The Campus Tennis Challenge will take place at the Riverside Tennis Club in Saskatoon from May 17-19 and will host teams from the University of Saskatchewan, the University of Regina and SIAST.
Teams consist of at least two women and two men. Teams will play each other in men’s doubles, women’s doubles, men’s singles, women’s singles and mixed doubles matches. Each team will play a total of five. The format ensures that each player will spend a substantial amount of time on court — something that Carolyn Chang, a player from Saint Mary’s University enjoyed after playing in the Halifax tournament.
“The great thing about this weekend is you get so many matches against other student athletes,” she said.
The tournament isn’t reserved for high-level tennis players and is open to players of any skill level. The event is a great chance for those who haven’t played in many tennis tournaments before to become more familiar with the game and meet other players.
Tennis Canada and Tennis Saskatchewan aim to provide students with a high level of competition while focusing on the development and growth of university and college tennis across the country while promoting fair play and sportsmanship.
The deadline to register for the event is May 10, those interested should contact universitytennis@tenniscanada.com. In order to be eligible, players must be enrolled full time in a post-secondary institution.
