REBEKAH LESKO & COLE GUENTER
One night after a disappointing 2-1 loss to the visiting Calgary Dinos, the Huskies made it clear they were not looking for a repeat Saturday night. The Dogs cruised to a 3-0 shutout victory and managed to hold on to third place in the Canada West standings.
The University of Saskatchewan’s rookie forward Jimmy Bubnick tallied two goals on the night. Taking a drop pass from Derek Hulak, Bubnick opened the scoring at 14:24 of the first period.
After getting into penalty trouble in the second period, the Dogs continued to work in Calgary’s zone. With just over three minutes left in the period, Saskatchewan’s Brandon Herrod stole the puck away from a Calgary defender for a shorthanded breakaway and bulged the twine over the shoulder of Dinos goaltender Dustin Butler.
Leading by two and with only eight seconds left in the second frame, Kenton Dulle sent a streaking pass across Calgary’s net to a wide-open Bubnick, who potted his second of the night on a Huskies powerplay.
The shots finished 37-17 in favour of the Huskies and Saskatchewan’s goaltender Ryan Holfeld picked up his first shutout of the season.
The loss kept Calgary in fourth spot in the Canada West standings with 32 points. Meanwhile the Huskies, with 35 points, are one point back of second place Manitoba with one week left in the regular season.
The Dogs will close out the season on the road against the last-place Lethbridge Pronghorns Feb. 8 and 9. The Huskies can steal second place from Manitoba if they win both games and if Manitoba loses one or ties both of their last two games against Regina.
The Huskies women’s hockey upset the Calgary Dinos at Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary Feb. 1 and secured themselves a spot in the post-season.
The Huskies dismantled the best team in the league Friday night with a 2-1 win thanks to a two-goal performance from second-year forward Sara Greschner. Greschner scored twice in the third period to give the Dogs a 2-0 lead.
It appeared the Huskies would get the shutout, but in the last minute of play Calgary pulled their goalie and Hayley Wickenheiser beat Saskatchewan’s netminder Cassidy Hendricks.
The loss was only Calgary’s fourth regulation-time loss of the season.
Calgary stormed back in the rematch the following night and defeated the Dogs 5-2.
Dinos captain Tanya Morgan led all scorers in Saturday’s game with a goal and two assists. Hayley Wickenheiser also added two assists in the win.
Calgary remains in first place with an impressive 21-4-1 record. The Huskies move to 10-12-4, and with 24 points, the single win on the weekend was enough to clinch the final playoff spot.
The Dogs will attempt to move further up the standings in their last week of the regular season play against the Lethbridge Pronghorns Feb. 8 and 9 at Rutherford Rink. Puck drop is at 7 p.m.
