Sinking the game-winning basket with 0.01 second remaining on the clock, Hogberg hoisted the Huskies to an 82-80 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen at the PAC on Feb. 1.
The teams swapped leads nine times in the second half of the game before Hogberg drained the winner. She finished with 14 points in the game while forward Dalyce Emmerson led the team with 19 points and 15 rebounds on the night.
The win gave the Huskies a six-game winning streak, but they couldn’t extend the streak to seven, as the Wesmen brought their own fourth quarter heroics to Saturday night’s game. Winnipeg squeaked past the Dogs 64-63.
Starting the final frame down by nine points in the Feb. 2 game, Winnipeg went on a 13-0 point streak to steal the lead and seal the win.
Yael Kaplan and Lauren Anderson led the offensive attack for the Wesmen. Kaplan posted 14 points while Anderson notched 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The Huskies record is now 11-7, good enough for 22 points and third spot in the Canada West Prairie Division. They will join the men on the road trip to Manitoba next weekend to take on the 2-17 Bisons.
Huskies men’s basketball forward Matthew Forbes was unstoppable Feb. 1 and 2.
Playing at home against the visiting Winnipeg Wesmen, Forbes posted a career-high 40 points on Friday night, and followed that up with a 30-point game on Saturday to lead his squad to back-to-back wins at the PAC.
Forbes managed Friday night’s 40 points in just three quarters of play. With the Huskies leading 76-54 entering the final quarter, Forbes, along with starters Patrick Burns and Stephon Lamar, rested in the final frame to allow some of the rookies to get valuable game experience.
Winnipeg outshot the Huskies in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap as the Dogs cruised to a 95-74 victory.
The Huskies were back at it Saturday night and swept the Wesmen with an easy 89-65 win.
With four games remaining in the season, the Dogs will play two important games Feb. 8 and 9 against the Manitoba Bisons. Saskatchewan and Manitoba are currently tied with 26 points each, but because the Huskies have one more game remaining than Manitoba they currently sit in second place, one spot ahead of the Bisons, in the Canada West standings.
