The squads hosted the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat on Friday night. The Huskies men’s team dribbled circles around the Heat en route to a lopsided 91-64 victory.
Matthew Forbes led the charge, draining 19 points in the match and adding seven rebounds. Third-year forward Andrew Henry was close behind with 18 points of his own including four baskets from beyond the arc.
The Heat proved to hurt themselves in the game as they posted 23 turnovers that led to 29 Huskie points. The Dogs out battled the Heat under the basket as well, winning the rebound race 42-25.
The Dogs faced another western opponent on Saturday night when the Thompson River University WolfPack came to the PAC.
Following the same game plan that lead to success the night before the Huskies defeated the WolfPack 85-69, moving their win streak up to four games.
After a close opening half that saw the lead change sides a handful of times the Dogs closed out the third frame with a 19-6 point run and never looked back.
Stephon Lamar posted a game high 28 points to help bring his team to 10-4 on the season and keep pace with the top teams in the Prairie Division.
The women’s squad shocked the UBC Okanagan on their opening game of the weekend. The Dogs held the Heat to only 38 points in the first three quarters of action and went on to seal the victory 87-65.
The Dogs shot better than 50 per cent on the night to the Heat’s 32.3 per cent.
Fourth-year guard Kiera Lyons led the squad with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Dalyce Emmerson and Kelsey Trulsrud also earned double-doubles.
The women’s squad brought their winning momentum to Saturday night’s game against the TRU WolfPack. The Dogs led the game from the opening whistle onwards and finished with a 89-70 final to snap the WolfPack’s seven game winning streak.
With these wins the Dogs move to 8-6 on the season and are tied for third place in the Prairie Division with Alberta.
Both of the Huskies basketball squads will travel to Manitoba next weekend to play the Brandon Bobcats, the last place team in both the men’s and women’s leagues.
