BROOKE GARNER
The Huskies basketball teams entertained two western opponents last weekend. The University of British Columbia Thunderbirds arrived Nov. 23 and the Victoria Vikes played Nov. 24 at the PAC.
Ranked one spot higher than their opponent, the Huskies women’s basketball squad pummeled the No. 10 UBC Thunderbirds.
Dropping shots right from the first blow of the whistle, the Huskies offence outpaced the T-Birds in the opening half and jumped ahead 32-24 at halftime.
The Dogs stayed hot in the third quarter, sinking 26 points in the frame and grabbing a 19-point lead that was too much for the UBC to overcome in the fourth quarter.
The game ended with a 72-62 victory for the Huskies.
Leading Saskatchewan in the win was Dalyce Emmerson with a double-double of 20
points and 12 rebounds. She was helped by Desarae Hogberg and Kiera Lyons with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
The following night the Dogs didn’t find the same success against the Vikes.
Despite leading 33-29 at halftime, the last half was owned by Vikes baskets. Once the Vikes took the lead on a basket seven minutes into the third quarter, they did not relinquish the lead and downed the Dogs with a 70-59 final score.
Leading Victoria’s scoreboard was Debbie Yeboah with 21 points. She was closely followed by Jessica Renfrew, who put up 20, and Chelsea McMullen, who added another 18 points in the win.
Lamar leads men’s squad past Vikes
The Huskies men’s basketball team kept fans on the edge of their seats Nov. 23 against the Thunderbirds but couldn’t complete the comeback after being down by as much as 15 points.
Leading the scoring for the T-Birds was Brylle Kamen with 18 points. He also added 12 rebounds. O’Brian Wallace chipped in with 16 while Doug Plumb and Tommy Nixon
added 13 apiece.
The following night, Huskies point guard Stephon Lamar netted a whopping 32 points to lead the Huskies to victory over the Vikes.
Victoria dominated the majority of the first frame, stepping out to a comfortable nine point lead early on. It wouldn’t last long though. Lamar and the Huskies soon hit their stride and pulled into a lead that they kept adding to for the rest of the game, finishing with a 90-74 win.
Also adding to the Huskie win was Ben Baker with 13 points and rookie Trevor
Severinski with 12.
After splitting the weekend matches, the Dogs record stands at 5-3, identical with Victoria’s. The teams are in different divisions of Canada West but both sit tied in second spot.
