Fifth-year forward Danny Stone scored with just over seven minutes to go in the third period to give the Huskies a 2-1 victory over the visiting Calgary Dinos on Nov. 16 in Rutherford Rink.
Huskie captain Cara Wooster stole the puck from the Dinos in the neutral zone and spotted Stone speeding into the Dinos’ end. Stone wired a shot past Dinos goaltender Amanda Tapp high on the short side.
Huskies rookie netminder Cassidy Hendricks made 28 saves in her second CIS win while Tapp made 23 saves for Calgary at the other end of the ice.
The teams laced up for game two of the weekend series the following night. The game was a back-and-forth affair left knotted at four goals apiece after 60 minutes.
In overtime, Calgary’s defenceman Stephanie Ramsay potted her second point of the night and the game-winner to give the Dinos a 5-4 overtime win.
With the overtime loss the Huskies still earn a valuable point in the standings and finish the weekend with three out of a possible four points against the Dinos, who entered the weekend ranked number two among women’s Canadian university hockey squads.
The Huskies record moves to 3-6-3 as they remain in last place in the league — though they know now they can compete with the league’s best. Calgary’s record falls to 9-2-1 but they still sit atop the league standings.
The Huskies women’s hockey club will be on the road next weekend playing in Lethbridge against the 4-5-3 Pronghorns.
Playing against each other for the first time since last season’s conference final playoff series, the University of Calgary Dinos stunned the Huskies men’s hockey team by defeating the Huskies 8-0 at Father David Bauer Arena Nov. 16.
Five Dinos players lit the lamp for their first goal of the season in the game. Blake Clement, Rylan Wiest, Kodie Curran, Giffen Nyren and Brooks Myers all rippled the twine for their first goal.
Dinos forward Taylor Stefishen led the squad with a three-point affair, posting three assists.
Derek Hulak and Jimmy Bubnick, two of Saskatchewan’s biggest frontline scorers, didn’t play due to injury. The lack of offensive presence meant the Dogs only took 19 shots on goal and couldn’t beat Dinos goalie Jacob DeSerres, who posted his first collegiate shutout.
The following night, the Dogs answered back in game two, edging out the Dinos and winning 5-4.
Kyle Bortis played a stellar game, scoring the Huskies first goal and adding three more assists.
Chris Durand and Jordan Peddle each tallied one goal while third-year forward Craig McCallum scored two, including the game winner.
The weekend split left the Dinos record at an even 6-6, while the Huskies move to 9-3.
The Huskies return home on Nov. 23 and 24 for a pair of games against the league’s last place team, the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
