After taking an initial lead early on in the game the ‘Horns couldn’t keep the ball. They riddled the first half with turnovers and fouls, but still managed a comeback late in the opening half to go into halftime with a one point lead.
The Huskies came out strong after mid-game break and their high percentage shooting led them to victory. Stephon Lamar scored a long three pointer to tie the score in the third quarter before Matthew Forbes took over the game and led the squad in scoring with 33 points on the evening. Forbes was followed closely by second-year Evan Osterag who netted 22 points and Ben Baker with 21.
The Pronghorns made their comeback on the following night. Lethbridge spread the ball around, with six players reaching double-digit figures in at least one category.
The Dogs clung to the lead for the majority of the first half but didn’t have the same shooting success. The Dogs shooting percentage was only 46 percent and allowed the ‘Horns to pull ahead in the third quarter.
Forbes led all players in points, notching 27 but it wasn’t enough to catch the ‘Horns, who went on to win 99-87.
The Pronghorns’ record rises to 3-1, while the huskies fall to 2-2 and drop in the national rankings from seventh to ninth spot.
The Huskies women’s Basketball team also played in Lethbridge and split the weekend’s matches with the Pronghorns.
Lethbridge hasn’t defeated the Dogs in over three years but pulled off a 67-61 upset of the number six ranked Huskies squad in the first of two games on the weekend at the 1st Choice Savings Center in Lethbridge.
Fifth-year Erin Skippon led the charge for the Pronghorns with 20 points and eight rebounds.
the ‘Horns shooting guard Ali Cameron helped out with 14 points in the winning effort.
The Pronghorns couldn’t pull of the sweep, however, and were dominated by the Dogs Nov. 10, losing 62-42.
The Dogs pulled away 9-0 point run in the second quarter and led 31-21 at the half. Saskatchewan kept up their strong play and widened their lead in the second half thanks to a balanced offensive attack.
Point guard Kiera Lyons finished the night with 14 points, rookie Desarae Hogberg and second-year Kelsey Trulsrud netted 12 and 10 points respectively to split the weekend matches.
The Pronghorns record improves to 3-1 and gives them second place in the Prairie Division. Meanwhile the Huskies are 2-2.
Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams will host the Calgary Dinos Nov. 16 and 17 at the PAC. Women’s games start at 6:15 p.m., followed by the men’s tip off at 8 p.m.
