Huskies rookie Jimmy Bubnick recorded two goals and an assist Saturday to lead the team to a 4-3 victory and a weekend sweep over the number one nationally ranked Alberta Golden Bears Oct. 19 and 20.
After the teams traded goals in the first ten minutes of the game Bubnick scored his first late in the opening frame, wrangling the puck amidst a scramble in front of Alberta’s goal and shooting it past Golden Bears goaltender Real Cyr.
Bubnick notched his second goal only 12 seconds into the second frame, beating Cyr on a low shot to give the Dogs a two goal advantage. Bubnick finished the night by setting up teammate Kyle Bortis on a pretty passing play to give the Dogs a 4-1 lead just over seven minutes into the second period.
The Dogs quickly found themselves in trouble though, taking three straight penalties just minutes after Bortis’s goal. The Bears took advantage of the opportunity, scoring twice with the ensuing man advantage.
Saskatchewan was able to stave off the Golden Bears in the third period and hold on for the win.
In the first game of the weekend, Huskies captain Brennan Bosch led the squad. Bosch scored a pair of goals in the team’s 2-1 victory.
The Huskies lead the league with a 5-1-0 record while Alberta falls to 3-3 on the season.
The Dogs now have a taste of what it will be like to play in the University Cup, as both of the weekend’s games were played at Saskatoon’s Credit Union Centre, the same venue where the Huskies will host the tournament to crown the CIS champion March 14-17, 2013.
The Huskies play next in Vancouver against the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds Oct. 26 and 27.
