Despite jumping to 1-0 leads in both games on the weekend, the Huskies women’s hockey team could not handle the strong scoring of the first-place Calgary Dinos.
Fourth-place Saskatchewan fell 5-3 and 5-1 to the Dinos at the Athletic and Ice Complex in Calgary.
In the first game on Feb. 3, the Huskies found their 1-0 lead midway through the first period snapped by three consecutive Calgary goals before the first intermission. The Dinos then added another early in the second.
While Saskatchewan made it close with two more goals of their own, Calgary secured the 5-3 victory with a marker late in the third period.
Erika Mitschke led the Dinos with two goals and one assist while Hayley Wickenheiser and Melissa Zubick both had two-point nights for Calgary. Danny Stone and Cara Wooster each put up one goal and one assist for the Dogs.
Vanessa Frederick stopped 25 of Calgary’s 30 shots in the game while the Dinos’ Amanda Tapp stopped 17 of 20.
On the second night, Breanne George’s early first-period goal was the Huskies’ only marker as Calgary cruised to a 5-1 win and held Saskatchewan to just 11 shots.
Jenna Smith and Wickenheiser both had two-goal nights for the Dinos while Tapp added 10 saves in the win.
Mackenzie Rizos stopped 26 of Calgary’s 31 shots.
The Huskies women’s team will host the UBC Thunderbirds at Rutherford Rink Feb. 10 and 11 as they try to move up in the Canada West standings.
