In the market for some new artwork to brighten up that dilapidated hovel you call a home? Why not stop by the VASU art auction, Silence!, and take your pick from a selection of fantastic pieces of student artwork. Everything is reasonably priced, and you can gorge yourself on fancy hor d’oeuvres to your heart’s content. There’s even going to be a live DJ — none of that elevator music in the background bullshit. Buying anything at the event supports student artists and future exhibitions.
From the press release:
The Gordon Snelgrove Gallery at the University of Saskatchewan is pleased to present Silence!, an exhibition of student work and annual silent auction. This group exhibition will showcase recent work from undergraduate and graduate students from the Department of Art and Art History. Silence! opens December 5th and can be viewed until December 9th, 2011. The silent auction will be held on December 9th between 7-10pm, and visitors will enjoy a cash bar, food, live music and a raffle. Final bids will be called at 9pm, and items must be purchased that night.
The annual student auction is a unique event where individuals from the community can purchase original works of art at a reasonable price. Visitors will have the opportunity to anonymously bid on a variety of painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, and sculpture.
Organized by the Visual Arts Students’ Union (VASU), all proceeds from the event will go to Bachelor of Fine Art Exhibitions, art student events, and a percentage will be returned to the student. VASU is a student-run group within the University of Saskatchewan and consists of senior students studying in the fields of Studio Art and/or Art History. The organization works for the students, organizing workshops, fundraisers, field trips, student art shows and auctions. VASU’s mandate is to encourage community involvement in the arts, establishing links with local galleries and businesses.
