The Saskatoon Valkyries were named the Western Women’s Canadian Football League champs this summer after a 35-7 victory over the Edmonton Storm in the final.
The win stopped the Storm’s seven-year championship stranglehold and sealed an overwhelmingly successful inaugural campaign for the Valkyries.
The team went 4-0 throughout the season, won each game by at least 30 points and breezed through playoffs with a 36-6 win over the Regina Riot in the semi-final.
Their dominance can likely be attributed to pure youth and talent — many of the Valkyries are also University of Saskatchewan Huskies athletes.
It is likely that their success will force other teams throughout the league to improve their recruiting for next season.
The WWCFL is Western Canada’s first-ever women’s tackle football league. It is made up of seven teams from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
