Peter Thiel has likely forgotten May 8.
The 6-1, 220-pound University of Saskatchewan Huskies linebacker was eligible to be drafted into the Canadian Football League on May 8, but was not chosen. Less than two weeks later, on May 17, he signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Thiel, 22, is from Regina and is very excited about the opportunity to play at home.
“Being from Regina, to come home and get an opportunity to play in front of the hometown fans — and the best fans in the CFL — is a surreal opportunity,” he told the Star Phoenix.
Last season, Thiel put up 20 solo tackles, 22 shared tackles and one quarterback sack in six games. His 5.2 tackles per game placed him at eighth amongst all players in the Canada West.
He was named a Canada West all-star and took part in the East West Bowl.
Terms of the contract have not been released but Thiel will take part in the Rider Rookie camp on June 1 at Mosaic Stadium.
Thiel has two seasons of Canadian Interuniversity Sport eligibility remaining.
