The Huskies finished with three gold medals at the Canada West championships held this past weekend in Saskatoon.
2009 CIS rookie of the year Ryan Myrfield (72kg), Daniel Olver (82kg) and Landon Squires (90kg) each left with gold draped around their necks. Olver’s gold medal was his fifth straight. Saskatchewan had five other medals including three silver and two bronze. Five of the Huskies medal winners were rookies.
The Regina Cougar men waltzed away with the men’s title, picking up 38 points, while Saskatchewan finished in second with 26 points. Calgary Dinos claimed the third spot with 22 points and the Alberta Golden Bears finished with 17.
The women’s Huskies took home two gold medals from the championship with Natasha Kramble (51kg) and Kathleen Kent (59kg). Koren Pitkethly (55kg) and Melanie Haanen (82kg) both took home silver and Huskies and captain Lindsay Olver (48kg) won bronze. Â
The women’s Dinos earned the team title with just four more points than the second place Alberta Golden Bears at 24. The Huskies finished third with 21 points and the Cougars finished fourth with 13 points.
The Huskies men’s basketball contingent had another strong showing this weekend, with a sweep of the University of Regina Cougars in a home-and-home series.
On Feb. 10, the Huskies stormed into Regina, taking the game 104-76. They ended the first quarter on a 14-4 run, extending their lead to 32 points going into halftime. Duncan Jones was eight for eleven from the point and led Saskatchewan with 21 points. Rejean Chabot and Jamelle Barrett scored 19 and 17 points respectively.
On Feb. 12, the Huskies hosted Regina and did not disappoint the home crowd. Saskatchewan ousted their opponents 110-83, led by Canada West leading scorer Jamelle Barrett scoring 33 points. Duncan Jones added another 23 points for the Huskies, shooting four three-pointers in the game. Michael Lieffers scored 15 and Trevor Nerdahl added 10 points.
The Huskies move to 18-4 on the season and sit in third place in the Canada West standings with two games remaining.
Huskies women’s basketball finished their games this weekend with a pair of wins and a ton of momentum. For the first time ever, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies will finish first in the Canada West regular season standings at 20-2.
With a narrow 67-66 win in a wild Thursday night game, the Huskies fended off a near-comeback by the Regina Cougars. Huskies had a 16 point lead at halftime and controlled the first three quarters. The fourth quarter had three lead changes, but the Huskies prevailed after winning an offensive rebound after two Jill Humbert free throw attempts. Humbert led all players with 19 points. Kim Tulloch, who came in as Canada West’s leading scorer, had 10 points and 10 rebounds to score a double-double.
The following game, on Feb. 12, the Huskies clinched first place with a 100-87 victory. The Huskies move to 20-2 on the season with just two games remaining in their schedule. A multi-faceted offensive display was put on, with five Huskies scoring in the double digits. Point guard Jill Humbert led with 26, followed by Kim Tulloch with 24. Katie Miyazaki added 19 points, while forwards Jana Spindler and Marci Kiselyk each finished the game with 12 points.
Both of the Huskies basketball squads will hit the road to face the University of Calgary Dinos Feb. 18 and 19 in the final games of the regular season.
The Huskies men’s volleyball team had a successful weekend after bashing the Regina Cougars in two straight victories.
The Huskies visited Regina Feb. 11, and won by scores of 25-20, 25-18, and 25-21 to notch their second victory on the year. Matthew Busse led the attack with match highs with 13 kills and a .550 hitting percentage. Adam McTavish had 34 assists for Saskatchewan, while Danny Alcorn had nine kills and Braden McLean recorded a team-leading five blocks.
In the final match of the season, the Dogs successfully swept the Cougars on Feb. 12. In similar fashion to their first game, the Huskies won in straight-sets (26-24, 26-24, 25-22) for their third win and first sweep of the year. Danny Alcorn led Saskatchewan with 10 kills, while Geoffrey Zerr had seven kills. Braden McLean had seven kills and led all players with seven blocks, while Matthew Busse had a team-leading 10 digs and five blocks.
The Huskies women’s volleyball team finished their season with two losses to the Regina Cougars team. The Cougars needed the two wins to advance to the Canada West quarterfinal series against Trinity Western.
The first game on Feb. 11 saw the Cougars win 3-1 (15-25, 25-23, 25-10, 25-19). Katie Graves provided an excellent defensive display for Saskatchewan, leading all players with 27 digs and adding 11 kills for a double-double. Candace Hueser led the Huskies with 12 kills, while Haley Manson finished with 11 digs.
In second game on Feb 12, the Cougars won 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-18). Katie Graves led all players with 11 digs, while Candace Hueser had a team-high eight kills for Saskatchewan. Kira Zeeben had a match-high six blocks for the Huskies.
The women’s Huskies finish the season with a 2-16 record and the men’s with a 3-15 record — both unable to make the playoffs.
