The Huskies track and field team is looking for continued success this weekend when they head to Winnipeg for the Bison Classic. The Huskies are coming off a great weekend where they finished with 25 medals at the 42nd annual Downtown Lions Sled Dog Open.
Taking home gold for the Huskies at the Sled Dog were Taylor Petrucha (pole vault), Taryn Suttie and Nolan Machiskinic (weight throw), Veronika Smits (long jump), Shona Richie (high jump), Taryn Suttie (shot put) and Andrew Smith (shot put).
Huskies silver medal winners were Meghan Richey (pole vault), Kristen Mackie (weight throw), Lane Britnell (pole vault), Uzair Ahmed (60-metre hurdles), Angie Lang (high jump), and Lincoln Crooks (high jump).
Winning bronze medals for the Huskies were Amanda Herron (60-metre hurdles), Amanda Banks (600-metre), Cossy Nachilobe (triple jump), Courtney Weins (long jump), Breanna Rak (shot put), Kyle Donsberger (300-metre), Gerad Dyck (high jump), James Digel (long jump), and Nolan Machiskinic (shot put).
The Bison Classic is set for Feb. 5 in Winnipeg.
The Huskies men’s basketball team are back on home court for a pair of games as they entertain the Alberta Golden Bears at the Physical Activity Complex. Playoff positioning is on the line as both teams are even with 14 wins apiece but the Huskies have played two fewer conference games.
The Huskies are coming off a weekend split with Trinity Western where they fell 102-91 on Jan. 28, before beating the Spartans 101-93 one night later. The loss snapped the Huskies 10-game winning streak but the Dogs have won 11 of their last 12 games overall.
Jamelle Barrett and Regean Chabot continue to lead the way offensively with Barrett finishing with 42 points on Jan. 28 and 31 points on Jan. 29 while Chabot chipped in with 12 points and 35 points in the two games respectively.
The men host Alberta Feb. 4 and 5 with tip-off scheduled for 8 p.m. both nights.
For the first time this season the No. 1-ranked Huskies women’s basketball is getting set to host Alberta.
The Huskies are coming off a weekend sweep of Trinity Western, in the process extending their win streak to 14 games. Kim Tulloch lead the way offensively with a game-high 21 points in the 89-42 win on Jan. 29 which followed up an 11 point effort a night earlier.
Jill Humbert put 14 points on the board while Katie Miyazaki chipped in with 13 in the Huskies 67-43 win on Jan. 28.
The Huskies will host Alberta this weekend at the PAC with games on Feb. 4 and 5. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. both nights.
The Huskies men’s hockey team have their eyes set on first place in Canada West as they enter the home stretch of the season.
The Huskies sit in a tie for second place with Manitoba in the Canada West standings and are just two points back of the conference- leading Alberta Golden Bears. The Huskies are 5-1 in 2011 after a sweep of the visiting Calgary Dinos this past weekend at Rutherford Rink.
Calgary had just come off a sweep over the Bears and were looking to pull into first place but they ran into a hot Huskies team that put up 6-3 and 3-0 wins on Jan. 28 and 29 respectively.
The Huskies will host Alberta with first place likely up for grabs on Feb. 11 and 12 but first head to UBC for a pair of games on Feb. 4 and 5. The Thunderbirds will be hungry for a couple wins after they were swept by Lethbridge. The Pronghorns and Thunderbirds are currently tied for fifth place in Canada West with 22 points apiece and trail Calgary by just two points for the fourth and final playoff spot.
The Huskies women’s hockey team is gearing up for the final two weeks of the regular season and on Feb. 4 and 5 will host the suddenly surging UBC Thunderbirds. The Thunderbirds have won three straight and are looking to extend their streak heading into Rutherford Rink this weekend.
The four playoff teams in Canada West have been determined with Alberta, Calgary, Manitoba and Saskatchewan all making post-season plans, but in just what order they finish has yet to be determined. The Huskies sit in fourth place just two points back of third place Manitoba, five points back of second place Calgary and six back of conference-leading Alberta.
The Huskies will be without leading goal scorer Breanne George who is away playing for Team Canada at the 25th Winter Universiade in Turkey. George is expected to return to the Huskies lineup when they finish the regular season on the road in Alberta in what could be a potential first round playoff preview.
Puck-drop at Rutherford Rink is scheduled for 7 p.m. on both Feb. 4 and 5.
With just two weeks remaining in the regular season the Huskies men’s volleyball team is left playing the role of spoiler.
This weekend the Huskies travel to Alberta to play the 13-1 Golden Bears who sit second in Canada West trailing only Calgary who are a perfect 14-0. With a strong showing the Huskies can deflate the Bears hopes of finishing first in the conference.
Next weekend the Huskies are in Regina looking to play spoiler again where the Cougars need to win their remaining four games in order to have a chance at making the post season.
